1997 ICDIA and IDMA Awards
Presentation of Awards by Paul G. Holmes,
Executive Director of ICDIA & IDMA
Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to the presentation of
the International CD-I Awards for 1997. This is the sixth consecutive
year of the CD-I awards and this year for the first time, the awards
ceremony is shared with our sister organization, the IDMA and two of
the awards will actually be presented by the new association. For those
who are new to these awards, The Rules are quite simple. The titles
have to play on a CD-I, Video CD or DVD player. They are judged by
juries, this year there were five different ones. Some of these juries,
those that require expertise, such as training are made up of experts
and some, such as the titles for sales and information Kiosks are
judged by members of the General Public.
We start tonight's
awards with a category that was judged by a panel of youngsters, around
12-15 years of age and it is the Best New Interactive Game. Yes, they
are still making new games for CD-i.
The Bonze Award for Best New
Interactive Game
goes to "Whack a Bubble" developed by Creative Action Holland
and to
receive the award is Herman Van Oldenmark. President of Creative Action Holland
The Silver Award for Best New
Interactive Game goes to "Tetsuo Gaiden"
which is also
developed by Creative Action Holland.
So once again Herman Van
Oldenmark Will collect the trophy.
The Gold Award for Best New
Interactive Game, goes to a title that appeals to all ages,
"Labyrinth
of Crete" Published and distributed by pmpro and Bookmark Direct.
It is worth remembering that there is still a relatively successful
consumer side to CD-I and that it is being keep alive here in North
America largely by the guys and galls at pmpro and in Europe by the
efforts of Alan McNaught.
The
Information Category always attracts a large and diverse entry. This
year is no exception.
We start with the Bronze Award, Information, which goes to
another Dutch company, Valkeiser,
for their excellent title, "In the
Wake of Captain Cook."
The Silver Award, Information is for a magazine, a digital
interactive magazine, published by a car company, a car company from
Europe.
The
Silver award goes to Automobiles Peugeot, for the ninth issue of "Magazine Interactif Peugeot".
To receive the award, from
France comes Yann Goenvec
The winners of the Gold Award, Information were here last year
to collect a Silver and they said then that they would be back this
year for the Gold. It is a special pleasure for me to present the
Gold
award for the Best Informative Title to the Sears Roebuck CD-I Team for
"Circle of Beauty".
Now we have further proof that CD-I is a great platform for Sales
Kiosks.
All three winners of the Best Point of Sale category are
internationally famous companies.
You can't start with a better
example than the winner of
the Bronze award, the "BMW Multi-Media Kiosk"
developed by
Communications for BMW of North America
The
Silver Award goes to a car company we know even better,
General Motors
Corporation for the "Saturn Interactive Display", created by McGill
Multimedia.
The Gold Award for Best Point of Sale Title has a
particularly international flavor, reflecting the international
standards of CD-I A Japanese motorcycle company using a Dutch Developer
to make their Sales Kiosk for the Italian market.
The winner is "YAMAHA 98". developed for japanese
motorcycle company Yamaha
by Herman Van
Oldenmark of Creative Action Holland.
The other type of kiosk that draws a large entry is the 'Point of
information Kiosk'.
Winner of the Bronze Award for Best Point
of Information Title, and once again illustrating our success in the
motor industry is
General Motors Corporation for their outstanding
kiosk "GM on 5th Creation Station",
the fifth is Fifth Avenue, New York
and the developer is McGill Multimedia.
One place you really need
information is your hotel room in a strange city. No where more so than
a city such as Chicago.
The Silver Award for Best Point of Information
goes to "Infotravel, Chicago (Video Master)"
Made for Bell Atlantic by
pmpro.
When the winners of the Gold award wanted to find a way to get
the attention of Doctors they decided to use a Time machine. The time
machine which could take a doctor on a journey through the life of a
female from a young girl to an old lady. Discovering and diagnosing all
the troubles along the way. This title contains a great diagnostic game
for doctors and a huge amount of information.
The Gold award for Best
Point of Information goes to "Dr. Foresight's Time Machine"
made for
Pharmacia & Upjohn by Oberone Interactive.
Corporate Training is by far the most competitive category in the
entire competition. Corporate Training is one of the success stories of
CD-I and if you had been through each entry as I have and watched the
juries trying to decide you would realize that these winners are only
the tip of the iceberg when it comes to CD-i's success in training.
The
Bronze Award for the Best Corporate Training Title goes to
Chrysler
Corporation for the "1998 Product Review."
Produced for Chrysler
Corporation by Ross Roy U.S. and created for CD-i by McGill Multimedia.
As some of you know I am a train buff, so it was particularly exciting
for me when a training program on changing out the traction motors on a
great loco like the "General Electric AC 44" was entered. Now I am very
happy to say it has won.
this year's Silver Award is "General Electric AC 44"
developed for CSX Transport by developers Gulliver Ritchie.
I am sure every one in this room
watched the battles of Desert Storm with great excitement. Now some of
the lessons learned during those battles are being incorporated into
the military equipment for the future.
The US Army has chosen CD-I as
the method for training on this new equipment and one example developed
by pmpro for Prosoft is the winner of the Gold Award for corporate
training,
The Gold Award for Corporate Training goes to "Bradley Fighting Vehicle Desert Storm
Improvements."
developed
by pmpro for Prosoft
Last year we had separate soft skills and generic training categories.
Some people found this a little confusing so this year we have combined
them into one, the Best Generic Training Title.
The winner of the
Bronze Award decided to use CD-I to take a Candid Look at a very
important problem, Sexual Harassment. The award goes to one of the
world's largest Aircraft manufacturers for a title
developed for them.
"A Candid Look at Sexual Harassment."
Developed for McDonnell Douglas by pmpro
Training to be an expert in Auto parts could be a soul destroying task.
However, using lots of video, testing and excellent animations McGill
Multimedia, made "Western Auto Parts America's, ASE Certification Study
Guide" both a very interesting program and a worthy winner..
Silver Award for Best Generic Training. "Western Auto Parts America's, ASE Certification Study
Guide"
Developed by McGill Multimedia for Western Auto Parts
Training physiotherapy patients
in the best way to exercise is not easy. So the winners of the Gold
Award took a CD-I player connected a light pen and set about creating a
complete video library of physiotherapy exercises. Now connect the
whole thing to a VCR and at the end of the training session the patient
goes home with a personalized exercise program.. Created by RISE
International for IACOM the Gold winning Generic Training Title is
"Body Response"
As I say every year it seems that Developers of VideoCD &
CD-I and now DVD titles all think they are budding Michele Anglo's The
Best Art Direction Category is always one of the most heavily contested
categories and this year was no exception. The winner of the Bronze
Award proved that not only can they create very informative titles they
can also create very beautiful ones. Pharmacia & Upjohn must be
delighted that they chose Oberon Interactive to create "Dr. Foresight's
Time Machine" because it has now also won the bronze award for Best Art
Direction Obviously if you are going to call something the Creation
Station and put it on fifth avenue you want it to be pretty creative
and artistically exciting. Well McGill Multimedia have managed to
achieve both of these things for their client General Motors with "GM
on 5th The Creation Station" which wins the Silver Award. Like some of
the others categories, choosing a winner in the art direction category
can be very difficult. Well this year the choice was unanimous For both
artistic beauty and technical excellence the Gold Award for Best Art
Direction goes to PIMC & Moland Interactive Ltd. for the "Bang
& Olufsen BeoCenter AV5"
IDMA Awards - Now for the
first award from the new Interactive Digital Media Association. The
IDMA will be concerned with the way forward and the future of
Multimedia. One big part of that future will certainly revolve around
DVD. For that reason the first award to be presented by the IDMA is for
the Best DVD-ROM or DVD-Video Title of 1997.
The Bronze Award has been won by Multimedia Technology Center for the
outstanding work they did in converting "Kids Count" to DVD. To receive
the very first IDMA award, from MTC. Mr. Rick Hallock.
The Silver Award goes to Toshiba and Mindsai for creating Discovery
Communications excellent title "Animal Planet for DVD. The Gold Award
is for something really special. When you play this game it's like
combining the excitement and fun of, Seventh Guest and Voyeur with the
beauty and speed of DVD and a trip to the psychiatrist. If this is DVD
then bring on DVD. Tender Loving Care by Aftermath Media is the winner
of the first ever IDMA Gold award.
CD-ICON Awards - Now we
come to the presentation of the CD-Icons. In the world at large an Icon
is someone we look up to and honor, in the world of computers, an Icon
is something one selects for a reason. That is why we call this award
the CD-icon, because these are people and companies we look up to and
who this year have been chosen because of their contribution to the
success of Television Based Multimedia, CD-I and Video CD. As to the
future, who knows, which companies we will be presenting Icon awards to
next year. I would like to ask our Chairman Rob Whent to present the
CD-Icons on behalf of the Directors and members of the Association.
Last year we presented a CD-Icon to an American automobile
manufacturer. This year to further demonstrate the success of CD-I in
the Automobile industry we are very proud to present a CD-Icon to a
European Car Company. For Their Commitment to CD-I the first 1997
CD-Icon is presented to Automobiles Peugeot. To receive the awards from
France Yann Goenvec How do you make cardboard boxes exciting? Our next
Icon winner has succeeded not only in doing that, but, in turning
cardboard boxes into an art form. For their exciting application of
CD-i technology our next CD-Icon is presented to the Containerboard
Packaging Business of Weyerhaeuser.
Frank Pauli with CD-ICON Award
One person who has always supported our activities and is
known both here and in Europe as Mr. CD-I is here tonight and we cannot
allow the occasion to pass without taking the opportunity to say thank
you. For his Support of our association, the next CD-Icon award goes to
Mr.Frank Pauli. The company that receives our next CD-Icon is famous for
at least two things. One, it's flame broiled Burgers and two, the use
of CD-I for it's world wide training. For this recognition of CD-I as
the most successful platform for International training our next
CD-Icon is presented to that fast food company with taste, Burger King.
When you talk about In house development it is sometimes like talking
about desk top publishing. It has it's gray areas. Well the CD-I
development team we are going to honor tonight is far above that level.
A fact they have ably proved by already winning a Gold award. For
Outstanding Achievement as developers of 'In-House training programs,
our last 1997 CD-Icon award is presented to the
SEARS' CD-i development team
Choosing
the winners was very difficult. Virtually all of the entries were good
enough to win, so there are no losers only those that deserved to win
and didn't. Thank you.
